Domestic Violence Facts
Domestic violence is a crime. If you are mentally, sexually, physically assaulted, threatened or harassed by a person you are living with or intimately involved with, you are a victim of domestic abuse. Abuse can be verbal, physical, emotional, sexual or economic. An abused person can be male or female, gay or straight, of any age, race, class, culture, religion or occupation.

If you are abused, remember:
  • You do not deserve to be abused. No one - no man, no woman, no child, no parent - has the right to hit or put you down. Marriage or a close relationship does not give one person the right to abuse another.
  • You are not alone. Estimates from a recent survey* indicate that more than 1.5 million women are physically and/or sexually abused by an intimate partner each year in the United States.
*Thaden P, Thoeanes N. Extent, Nature and Consequences of Intimate Partner Violence: Findings From the National Violence Against Women Survey. Washington, D.C.: US Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs; 2000, Publication NCJ 181867.
  • You may be in serious danger. Domestic violence tends to get worse over time.
  • If you have children, they are hurt by hearing or seeing the violence in your home.
You have choices. Reading this is the first step.
