New outreach program
designed for beauticians
Turning Point is offering a new educational program to help beauticians understand how domestic abuse might be affecting their customers.
These 20-minute sessions are presented free of charge to salons upon request.
Presenters give a brief overview of Turning Point’s services and then offer suggestions of ways stylists can assist customers who disclose that they are in abusive relationships.
Beauticians are not encouraged to offer advice or provide counseling, only to offer information about Turning Point when appropriate.
Turning Point will also provide salons with posters and cards printed with the agency’s helpline number.
The program is being funded in part by a $4,000 grant from the Leona Gruber Charitable Trust
Any salon interested in scheduling one of these information sessions for their employees can call Stephanie at 610-797-0530 x228.
Training available for police
Turning Point of Lehigh Valley and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s office are collaborating on a new initiative to train police officers to respond appropriately to domestic violence situations. The course, which takes place over several sessions, is being offered free of charge to all Lehigh County police departments.
Participants learn about types of domestic abuse, how abusers control their victims, the types of evidence that are helpful in building a case against an abusive person, how to determine which person is the primary aggressor in a domestic dispute, why taking photos of a victim’s injuries and the scene is important, and how to offer assistance to a victim. They will also receive information about Protection From Abuse (PFA) orders, indirect criminal contempt penalties for violating PFAs, and Full Faith and Credit rules as they apply to PFAs.
A representative of the District Attorney’s office will also review the protocol that officers are expected to use when responding to domestic violence situations.
Several Lehigh County police departments have completed this training program in the past year, including Allentown City, Emmaus Borough, Salisbury Township and Berks-Lehigh Regional Police.
