Program for
Children and Teens
Turning Point recognizes that children in violent families are victims. Through individual counseling sessions and support groups, children learn to cope with their environment, solve conflict without violence,
and most importantly realize that violence is not their fault. Childrens advocates also provide parenting education in the form of non-violent parenting methods and positive role modeling.
Children are allowed to talk about their feelings in a nurturing and supportive environment. They are made to feel important. Children living in a violent household may be starved for attention because the parents lack the emotional energy to devote to them. Through individual and group counseling sessions, children are assisted in:
Developing plans for their own safety when verbal or physical abuse occurs in their home.
Learning nonviolent conflict resolution to use with peers, siblings, parents and other adults which may be the first link to stopping the generational cycle of violence in their families.
Resolving the guilt/self-blame that comes from being in an abusive household, allowing them to build self-esteem, develop positive friendships and focus on their future with hope of accomplishments.
